Dogs and cats looking for homes

SRAS posts available pets through its Shelterluv-powered available pets page. Dog adopters should be serious and prepared because shelter dogs are viewed through the adoption process, not casual browsing.

Owner-surrendered pets

The shelter says it specializes in rehoming animals surrendered by their owners and treats those pets and former owners with compassion, kindness and respect.

Stray dog and lost-pet guidance

SRAS helps with lost/found questions, but stray-dog intake depends on jurisdiction and dispatch instructions. Healthy stray cats are handled differently.

Spay/neuter and vaccines

Call dispatch first

If you find a stray dog, SRAS says to call Bonneville County Dispatch at 208-529-1200 to report it and ask for an officer to be dispatched.

Ask before bringing dog

If an animal-control officer cannot pick up the dog and asks you to bring it to SRAS, ask for an incident number.

Different rule for cats

SRAS says animal control will not pick up a stray, healthy cat because there are no ordinances banning healthy free-roaming cats in Bonneville County and its cities.

If your pet is missing

• Check SRAS available and found/lost pet information repeatedly.
• Message the shelter on Facebook because SRAS notes lost pet pickup is available 7 days a week through Facebook messaging.
• Call 208-523-4219 during business hours for shelter questions.
• Check Idaho Falls Animal Shelter and nearby agencies if your pet may have crossed jurisdiction boundaries.
• Update microchip contact information immediately.
• Bring proof of ownership if you see a possible match: photos, vet records, microchip number, license or adoption paperwork.

If you found a dog

• Do not assume SRAS can accept every stray dog from every location.
• Take clear photos and note the exact location found.

How surrender works

• Contact SRAS and get on the waitlist if eligible.
• Complete the online surrender form before entry.
• Wait for staff to call and schedule an appointment when space is available.
• Bring the dog on a leash or the cat in a carrier.
• Bring vet records, microchip information and medications disclosed in advance.
• The pet must pass a behavior evaluation, and SRAS may refuse animals it cannot safely or appropriately accept.

Why the waitlist matters

• Shelter space changes based on adoptions, returns, medical cases and staffing.
• Already spayed/neutered pets may enter the facility more quickly.
• Sick, injured, dangerous or medically complex pets may be difficult for the shelter to accept.
• If the pet came from another shelter, SRAS may require verification that the original shelter will not take the pet back.
• Do not abandon the animal on shelter property, tied, crated or without notice.

Healthy outdoor cat

Do not assume the cat is abandoned. Many outdoor cats live nearby, and healthy cats may be best left in place unless injured, sick or clearly in danger.

Scan for microchip

If safe, ask a shelter or vet about microchip scanning. A chip can help reunite the cat with an owner.

Do not relocate casually

Relocating a healthy cat can make it harder for an owner to find the cat and can put the cat at risk.

• Introduce resident pets slowly and safely.
• Schedule a vet visit if recommended by staff or your veterinarian.
• Watch for coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, limping, refusal to eat or severe anxiety.
• Call SRAS early if the adoption is not working instead of waiting until the problem is urgent.

Arrive early

Adoption processing requires time. Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing, preferably earlier.

Call for one pet

If you are driving for one specific animal, call first because pets are not held over the phone.

Check jurisdiction

For stray dogs, use dispatch and animal-control routing before assuming SRAS can accept the animal.
