Dogs, cats and livestock

The county adoption pages include adoptable dogs, adoptable cats and livestock that may be available through Animal Services.

Reclaim and reunite pets

The lost and found section helps owners search for pets at the shelter and tells finders how to report or bring in an animal.

Animal enforcement

Animal-control dispatch uses the main line, with option 3 for Animal Control, plus after-hours emergency routes.

Dogs under 6 months

$100 is the listed adoption fee for dogs under 6 months.

Dogs 6 months+

$20 is the listed adoption fee for dogs 6 months and older.

Cats under 6 months

$25 is the listed adoption fee for cats under 6 months.

Cats 6 months+

$20 is the listed adoption fee for cats 6 months and older.

Adoptable dogs

Dogs of different ages, sizes and personalities may be listed. Some dogs may need extra time, patience or training.

Adoptable cats

Cats and kittens may be listed at the shelter and may also be available through local partner stores.

Livestock

Livestock availability can change. If no animals are shown, there may be no livestock currently available.

Satellite cats

Clay County notes adoptable cats may also be available at local Petco, PetSmart and Petsense partner locations.

7 AM–5:30 PM

Animal-control dispatch contact hours are listed separately from shelter public visit hours.

Emergency routing

After 6:30 PM emergencies are routed to Clay County Fire Rescue Dispatch or the Clay County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch.

If your pet is missing

• Search and upload a picture through Petco Love Lost.
• Check found animals currently at the shelter.
• Visit Animal Services at 3984 State Road 16 West.
• Call 904-269-6342 for help.
• Submit a Clay Connected service request when needed.

Reclaim documents to prepare

• Proof of ownership, such as photos or vet records.
• Proof of rabies vaccination.
• Picture ID.
• Microchip fee if applicable.
• Any applicable reclaim or service fees.

Check ID first

Look for a collar and ID tag. If contact details are visible, try to reach the owner safely.

Scan for microchip

Take the animal to a vet clinic or Animal Services to scan for a microchip.

Call Animal Services

Call 904-269-6342 to provide information in case the owner is searching for the pet.

Before surrendering

• Ask friends or family if they can adopt or foster your pet.
• Use safe rehoming websites to find a new home.
• Ask a vet or behavior resource for help with behavior problems.
• Ask Animal Services about pet food help if cost is the issue.
• Do not abandon a pet outside the shelter or in public.

Appointment requirements

• You must live in Clay County to surrender a pet.
• Make an appointment by email or phone.
• Fill out the correct dog or cat information form.
• Bring vet records if you have them.
• Show a valid Clay County ID and pay the listed surrender fee.

Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return

TNVR helps community cats by trapping them, spaying or neutering them, vaccinating them and returning them to their area.

Rabies clinic

Clay County lists low-cost rabies and microchip clinics on the first Tuesday of every month from 3 PM to 5 PM.

Microchip support

Microchips help lost pets return home. Ask Animal Services about clinic rules and fees before visiting.

Photo ID

Bring current picture ID for adoption, reclaim, surrender or service paperwork.

Proof of ownership

For reclaim, bring photos, vet records or paperwork showing the pet belongs to you.

Rabies proof

Bring rabies vaccination records if you are reclaiming a pet or handling paperwork.

Leash setup

Bring a secure leash, collar or harness if you may adopt or reclaim a dog.

Carrier

Bring a secure carrier if you may adopt or reclaim a cat or small animal.

Enough time

Do not arrive near closing if you need to meet animals, complete forms or handle reclaim steps.

Check for ID, scan for a microchip, post locally if safe, call Animal Services and bring the pet during open intake hours if needed.

Try alternatives first, make an appointment, complete the correct form, bring vet records and a valid Clay County ID.
