CURRENT

Current closure overrides old hours

Some older Town pages still display earlier shelter hours. The current main shelter page lists 10–6 weekdays and 10–4 weekends, but the September 2026 renovation notice temporarily makes the dog shelter appointment-only.

September 2026: Dog Shelter Is Appointment-Only During Renovations

This is the most important current detail on the page. The Town announced that the Huntington Animal Shelter would close to normal walk-in visitors beginning Monday, September 14, 2026 while renovations are completed.

CLOSED

No routine walk-in dog visits

During the renovation closure, call the shelter and make an appointment rather than driving to Deposit Road expecting ordinary public access.

ACO

Animal Control continues

The Town says Animal Control service remains fully operational and is not interrupted by the building renovation.

CAT

Cat Shelter is separate

The Town specifically says the neighboring Cat Shelter is not affected by the dog-shelter renovation closure.

Do not rely on map hours alone. A search result may still show the shelter’s normal operating schedule. The current Town renovation notice is more specific and should control your visit planning until the Town announces normal walk-in access again.

Choose the Correct Huntington Animal Service

Huntington Animal Shelter Regular Posted Hours

These are the hours currently displayed on the main Town shelter page. They should be treated as the shelter’s normal posted schedule, not as permission for a walk-in visit while the September 2026 renovation closure remains in effect.

Facility / day Current Town listing What to do in September 2026
Dog Shelter — Monday–Friday 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Call 631-754-8722 and make an appointment. Do not assume walk-in access.
Dog Shelter — Saturday & Sunday 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Current renovation notice remains the important visitor rule.
Cat Shelter — Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Cat Shelter remains separate from the dog-shelter renovation. Call 631-651-9788 before a special trip.
Cat Shelter — weekends 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Town page says the Cat Shelter is open seven days a week for adoptions.
Why you may see different hours elsewhere: several older Town pages still show 8 a.m.–6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. weekends for the dog shelter. The current main shelter page shows 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and the September 2026 announcement adds the temporary appointment-only restriction.

How to Adopt a Dog From Huntington Animal Shelter

During renovations, the most important first step is not simply showing up—it is calling the shelter and scheduling the visit.

Check current Town adoption information

Start with the official shelter page and current dog listings. Availability can change faster than an article or search result.

Call 631-754-8722

Because the dog shelter is appointment-only during renovation, confirm that the dog is available and schedule your visit.

Meet the dog and ask about behavior

The Town emphasizes training, behavioral assessment and socialization as part of its shelter program. Ask what staff know about the dog’s energy, handling and household needs.

Confirm the current adoption total

The Town currently lists the dog adoption fee at $103.50.

Review the included medical basics

The published dog fee includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, microchip identification and the Town dog license.

Prepare for the first few days

Even a friendly shelter dog can feel overwhelmed after moving. Set up a quiet routine, secure transport and a relationship with a veterinarian before problems become urgent.

$103.50

Current fee

Spay / neuter

Sterilization is listed as included in the adoption fee.

RABIES

Good value does not eliminate future costs: food, parasite prevention, routine veterinary exams, training, emergency care, medication and housing-related pet fees remain the adopter’s responsibility.

Town of Huntington Cat Shelter Is a Separate Facility

Cat adopters should not assume the dog shelter’s renovation closure applies to the building next door. The Town Cat Shelter is separately located at 104 Deposit Road, East Northport and is managed by Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center.

Lost or Found Pet in the Town of Huntington

If your dog or pet is missing

  • Call the Huntington Animal Shelter at 631-754-8722.
  • Use the Town-linked lost-pet search system.
  • Prepare a recent photo, microchip information, license details and veterinary records.
  • Search close to the last-seen location as well as online.
  • Update your microchip company with current contact details.
  • Check neighboring shelters if the animal could have crossed town or municipal boundaries.

If you found an animal

  • Check safely for a tag or visible owner information.
  • Contact Huntington Animal Control for field/intake guidance.
  • Ask a shelter or veterinary clinic to scan safely handled animals for a microchip.
  • Do not risk a bite trying to restrain an aggressive, injured or frightened animal.
  • If a bite or wild-animal exposure occurred, use the Suffolk County Health reporting route promptly.

Veterinary Care After Adoption in East Northport

LOCAL VET

Veterinary Center of East Northport

A separate local veterinary provider is Veterinary Center of East Northport, at 575 Larkfield Road, East Northport, NY 11731.

Phone: 631-266-6600 .

Current published clinic hours are Monday–Thursday 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., and Saturday 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m..

The practice lists wellness exams, vaccinations, microchipping, dental care, diagnostics, surgery, digital radiology, ultrasound and other veterinary services.

Routine exam / appointment fee: the current practice website does not publish a universal routine examination charge. This guide therefore does not invent one. Call the practice for the cost that applies to the actual service.
After-hours veterinary emergency: Veterinary Center of East Northport publishes separate 24-hour emergency referral hospitals for after-hours care. The Town’s Animal Control emergency number is not a substitute for emergency veterinary treatment.
